Thorpe, Jim

Thorpe, Jim (1888–1953)

US athlete. A member of the 1912 US Olympic Team in Stockholm, he won gold medals for the decathlon and pentathlon but was forced to return when he admitted that he had played semi-professional baseball. He played major-league baseball 1913–19 and was an outstanding player of professional football 1917–29. His Olympic medals were restored to him by the Amateur Athletic Union 1973.

Born in Prague, Oklahoma, Thorpe attended the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania.

He was named All-American in 1911 and 1912 and was posthumously elected to the Football Hall of Fame 1963.
