Thousand Oaks

City in southwestern California, 56 km/35 mi northwest of central Los Angeles and just northwest of the Santa Monica Mountains; population (1990) 104,400. It is a high-tech research and manufacturing centre. Electronics, aircraft parts, plastics, and precision instruments are among its products.

It developed rapidly in the 1960s from a rural village into an industrial and residential city. Some citrus groves remain. California Lutheran University (1959) is here.
