thumri

Vocal genre of North Indian (Hindustani) music in which the text setting (usually in two sections, sthayi and antara) is used as the basis of extended improvisations intended to draw out the expressive potential of the (normally romantic) text. Traditionally associated with female courtesan entertainers, it can now be heard sung by singers (of both sexes) specializing in other ‘light-’ or ‘semi-classical’ genres, or in khyal.
