Thucydides (c. 455 BC–c. 400 BC)Athenian historian. He was briefly a general during the Peloponnesian War with Sparta, but as a result of his failure to save Amphipolis from the Spartan general Brasidas, he was banished from Athens in 424. His History of the Peloponnesian War gives a detailed account of the conflict to 411. The work is remarkable not only for the detail and lucidity of the narrative, but the insight into motives and the reasons why things happened as they did |
