Tiaret (or Tihert)

Capital of Tiaret department in north-central Algeria; population (2001 est) 157,800. The town is situated in the Tell Atlas, on the slopes of Mount Guezoul, which rises to a height of 1,375 m/4,510 ft. It is a major agricultural centre for the Sersou plain, trading mainly in cereals and livestock. Arabian horses are also bred here.

The site of this old walled town has been occupied since Roman times and the town was ruled by Berbers, Arabs, and Turks. In 1843 it came under the control of the French who built a modern sector to the north.
