Tilden, Samuel Jones (1814–1886)

US politician. A Democrat, he was governor of New York 1874–76, elected on a reform ticket. He received the Democratic presidential nomination 1876, and although he received a plurality of popular votes, the 1877 electoral college awarded the majority of electoral votes to Rutherford B Hayes.

Born in New Lebanon, New York, Tilden was educated at Yale and New York universities, and became a barrister 1841.
