Tillamook

City and administrative headquarters of Tillamook County, northwestern Oregon, 101 km/63 mi west of Portland; population (1990) 3,000. It is at the southern end of Tillamook Bay, a Pacific inlet with extensive mudflats, noted for clamming, crabbing, and oystering.

British sailors found the bay by 1792, and it later became a resort centre, with the cities of Garibaldi and Bay City on the northeast, and the resort of Bay Ocean on the protective sandspit, which had to be abandoned in the 1950s because of erosion.
