Tilley, Vesta (1864-1952)

English music hall performer who was famous for her male impersonations. Her best-known creation was ‘Burlington Bertie’, an elegant tramp. She retired at the height of her popularity in 1920.

Tilley was born in Worcester into a music-hall family. She first appeared in Nottingham in her father's show at the age of three, in 1869. In 1873 she made her debut in London, playing two or three halls each night. Among the songs she made famous were ‘The Piccadilly Johnny’, ‘The Girl who Loves a Soldier’, and ‘Six Days' Leave’.
