Sovetsk

Town in the Kaliningrad region of the western Russian Federation. Sovetsk lies on the River Niemen (Neman), 90 km/56 mi northeast of Kaliningrad and near the Lithuanian border. Timber and paper production are the main industries. Until 1945, Sovetsk was in East Prussia, when it was known by the German name of Tilsit. Napoleon signed peace treaties with Prussia and Russia here in 1807, ending the War of the Third Coalition.

Sovetsk was founded in 1288 by Teutonic Knights as a fortress, and has been a town since 1552. The population is comprised mainly of Russian settlers, all Germans having been expelled from the region after World War II.
