Timagami, Lake

    0.09 sec.

Timagami, Lake

Lake in northeastern Ontario, Canada, 80 km/50 mi northwest of North Bay. Extending into long bays in all directions, it has a 600-km/370-mi shoreline, and is popular with canoeists and fishermen. Hundreds of islands dot the lake, and campsites dating back 6,000 years have been found.

The resort of Timagami (population (1991) 900) is on the long northeastern bay. Canada's first boys' camp was established on the lake in 1900.

The future of the heavily-logged surrounding area is the subject of controversy among locals, the Chippewa, and environmentalists. The Bear Island Band, based in the lake's centre, claim control of the land.
