Timmins

Town in Cochrane District, east-central Ontario, Canada, 740 km/460 mi north of Toronto; population (1996) 47,500. Gold was discovered in 1909, and the town, founded in 1911 by Noah Timmins to house miners, became the centre of the Porcupine gold-mining area of northern Ontario. Other minerals extracted include large deposits of zinc, silver, and tin, discovered in the region in 1964. Timber sawmills are located in the vicinity. The town adjoins a great clay belt comprising 60,000 sq km/23,166 sq mi of fertile agricultural land. Timmins is the service centre for the James Bay coast area. Tourism is also important to the local economy.
