Tinicum Island

Tinicum Island

Island in the Delaware River, southwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; length about 11 km/7 mi. It was the site of the first permanent white settlement in Pennsylvania, when it became the capital of New Sweden 1643–55; remains from this period are in Governor Printz Park. It is home to the Philadelphia International Airport and to chemical, paper, and power plants.

Tinicum township (population (1990) 4,400) includes Essington, site of a major Boeing aircraft plant.
