Tiomkin, Dimitri

Tiomkin, Dimitri (1899–1979)

Russian-born US composer and conductor. He lived in the USA from 1925 and wrote Hollywood film scores from 1930, including music for It's a Wonderful Life (1946), Duel in the Sun (1946), The Thing (1951), High Noon (1952), Rio Bravo (1959), and The Alamo (1960). He won five Academy Awards for his scores.

He developed an early interest in popular US music and is largely responsible for introducing Europeans to George Gershwin. He made his US conducting debut in 1938 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
