Tiverton

Market town in Devon, southwest England, on the River Exe, 22 km/14 mi northeast of Exeter; population (2001) 17,500. Textile manufacture is the chief industry. The restored Tiverton Castle (begun in 1066) includes two original towers and a 14th-century gateway.

Blundell's School, where R D Blackmore, author of the 1869 novel Lorna Doone, was a pupil, was founded here in 1604. St Peter's church has the richly carved 16th-century Greenway Chapel.

Tiverton

Town in southeastern Rhode Island, 13 km/8 mi northeast of Newport and 29 km/18 mi southeast of Providence, on the Sakonnet River and the Massachusetts border; population (1990) 14,300. It includes the villages of North Tiverton and Tiverton Four Corners. It is a growing suburb with tourism, agriculture, and fishing.

Originally part of the Plymouth Colony, this area was the site of the Battle of Almy's Pea Field (1675) in King Philip's War. Tiverton was annexed to Rhode Island in 1746.
