Tiahuanaco

Site of a city in Bolivia 24 km/15 mi south of Lake Titicaca in the Andes. It gave its name to the 8th–14th-century civilizations found in Peru and Bolivia that preceded the Inca. The Tiahuanco were responsible for many of the roads originally thought to have been built by the Inca.

Dating from c. 600, Tiahuanaco was situated 4,000 m/13,000 ft above sea level. According to Indian legend, it was built in one night by a race of giants.
