Tlaxcala

Smallest state of Mexico, in the centre; area 3,914 sq km/1,511 sq mi; population (2000 est) 961,900. Its capital is Tlaxcala. Much of the state consists of high land, with an average altitude of 2,100 m/7,000 ft. The main occupations are farming, producing vegetables, alfalfa, cereals, and maguey, and flour-milling and textile production. Cattle rearing and sheep farming are also significant economic activities.

Tlaxcala

Capital of the state of Tlaxcala in southern Mexico; population (1995) 63,400. Situated at an altitude of 2,240 m/7,349 ft the town lies at the foot of the northwest slope of the La Malinche volcano in the Sierra Madre Oriental, and is the commercial centre of an agricultural and cattle-raising district. Its chief industries are cotton and woollen textile manufacturing. It is one of the most ancient cities in Mexico and it has many buildings and features of historical interest, including the oldest church in Mexico, the church of San Francisco, built in 1521.

On market days the indigenous Otomi people demonstrate traditional arts such as embroidery and weaving.

More formally named New City of Our Lady of the Assumption, Tlaxcala was jointly founded by Hernán Cortés and the Franciscans between 1520 and 1525.
