Tlemcen

City of northwest Algeria, capital of Tlemcen department, 130 km/80 mi southwest of Oran; population (1998) 155,200. The city lies in an area of olive plantations and vineyards; industries also include textiles. For three centuries until 1553, when it came under Ottoman Turkish rule. Tlemcen was the capital of an Arab sultanate.

Formerly the Roman town of Pomaria, it was later the capital of the Zayyanid Muslim state. Much of the old town still remains. It fell to the French in 1842. Most of its European population left for France after Algerian independence in 1962. Notable buildings are the Grand Mosque and the Almovarid Great Mosque (dating from 1135), as well as synagogues, and a museum of antiquities.
