Tobermory

Main harbour and town on the island of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides, Argyll and Bute unitary authority, Scotland, situated on the northeast coast, 48 km/30 mi from Oban; population (2001) 700. Originally a planned town founded in 1788 by the British Fisheries Society, it is now the island's market and service centre, and has developed into a popular tourist venue with sailing facilities.

The sinking of the San Juan de Sicilia in Tobermory Bay, following the scattering of the Spanish Armada in 1588, continues to inspire salvage attempts; the galleon was reputed to be carrying a fortune in gold. In 1912 the first coins and silver goblets were recovered, but there has been little further progress.
