Tocantins

River in north-central Brazil; length 2,560 km/1,591 mi. The Tocantins rises in the state of Goiás and flows north into the Amazon delta. Its largest tributary is the Araguaia. Its course, which is much interrupted by rapids, is navigable only in some parts. Its economic value rests in the irrigation it provides for the plantations of babaçu palms on its upper reaches. The river has given its name to a remote state in northern Brazil.
