Todd, Garfield

    0.01 sec.

Todd, (Reginald Stephen) Garfield (1908–1992)

New Zealand-born Rhodesian politician, prime minister of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) 1953–58. He founded and led the United Rhodesia Party, but was removed as its leader by opponents of his liberal policies, which were also rejected by an increasingly right-wing White electorate. He was placed under restriction by the Rhodesian Front regime of Ian Smith 1965–76.

Todd was educated at Otago University, New Zealand and Witwatersrand University, South Africa. He came to Rhodesia to work as a missionary in 1934. After entering politics, he was MP for Shabani, 1946–58. In 1959, he founded the progressive Central African Party, but returned to farming when it lost the general election of 1962. Todd was a friend and political ally of the leader of the Black nationalist ZAPU Party, Joshua Nkomo.
