Tohoku

Tōhoku

Mountainous region of north Honshu island, Japan, area 66,971 sq km/25,857 sq mi; population (1995) 9,834,000. Timber, fruit, fish, and livestock are produced. The region consists of six prefectures, Aomori, Iwate, Akita, Yamagata, Miyagi, and Fukushima. The chief city is Sendai. Aomori in the northeast is linked to Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido by the Seikan Tunnel, the world's longest underwater tunnel.
