Tokugawa

Military family which controlled Japan as shoguns from 1603 to 1868. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542–1616) was the Japanese general and politician who established the Tokugawa shogunate; see Japan: shogunate and restoration 1192–1869. The Tokugawa were feudal lords who ruled about one-quarter of Japan. Undermined by increasing foreign incursions, they were overthrown by an attack of provincial forces from Chōshū, Satsuma, and Tosa, who restored the Meiji emperor to power.
