Toland, Gregg (1904–1948)

US director of film photography. He became one of the first cinematographic innovators of the sound era and used deep focus to outstanding effect in such films as Wuthering Heights (1939; Academy Award), Citizen Kane (1941), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and The Best Years of our Lives (1946).
