| US director of film photography. He became one of the first cinematographic innovators of the sound era and used deep focus to outstanding effect in such films as Wuthering Heights (1939; Academy Award), Citizen Kane (1941), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), and The Best Years of our Lives (1946). |
