Toleration Act

British legislation 1689 granting nonconformists rights of citizenship and a degree of religious freedom. They were allowed to have their own teachers, places of worship, and preachers, although dissenters were officially banned from public office. Temporary indemnity acts enacted annually from 1721 granted nonconformists immunity to stand for public office, but the formal ban was not lifted until 1828.
