Tolima

Department in Colombia, lying in the valley of the River Magdalena between the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Oriental of the Andes; area 22,464 sq km/8,673 sq mi; population (1996) 1,286,078. The capital is Ibagué. Tolima is a rich agricultural district, with coffee as its main cash crop; livestock breeding is also important. The highest peak in this mountainous area is the Nevado del Tolima (5,215 m/17,109 ft).

The department includes the volcanic peaks of Nevado del Ruiz, Nevado deli Tolima, and Nevado del Huila.
