Toluca

Capital of the state of México, 67 km/41 mi west of Mexico City; population (1995) 564,500. It is the highest town in Mexico. Toluca is the centre of an agricultural and stock-farming region; the main industries are cotton and wool textile manufacturing, ceramics, chemicals, and processing of food and agricultural products. Also produced are confectionery, sausages, and an orange liqueur called moscos.

To reach Toluca from Mexico City, it is necessary to follow a road that rises 3,000 m/9,842 ft over the Central Mexican Highlands. Large chemical plants are responsible for pollution in and around Toluca.
