Torquemada, Tomás de (1420–1498)

Spanish Dominican monk, confessor to Queen Isabella I. In 1483 he revived the Inquisition on her behalf, and at least 2,000 ‘heretics’ were burned; Torquemada also expelled the Jews from Spain 1492, with a resultant decline of the economy.
