Jones, Tom (1940– )

Welsh pop singer with a big voice whose hits in an enduring career include ‘It's Not Unusual’ (1964), ‘What's New, Pussycat?’ (1965), ‘Green, Green Grass Of Home’ (1966), and ‘Delilah’ (1968).

After a stint as a Las Vegas act, Jones made an unlikely comeback to the charts in the 1980s covering previous hits such as Prince's ‘Kiss’ and EMF's ‘Unbelievable’. He enjoyed commercial success with the album Move Closer (1989), as well as numerous compilations, including Things That Matter Most to Me (1988) and The Complete Tom Jones (1993). Among his late 1990s works were Tom Sings the Sixties (1999) and Tom Sings The Ballads (1999).

Jones also enjoyed great success in the 1990s collaborating with a younger generation of pop stars – including Robbie Williams, Catatonia, and the Cardigans – culminating in a 1999 album, Reload. He released his greatest hits album The Definitive: 1964–2002 in 2003.
