Tom Price

Mining town in northern Western Australia, 1,547 km/961 mi north of Perth; population (1996) 3,900. It was established after iron ore deposits were discovered in the district in 1962.

The town was named after the vice-president of the US-based company Kaiser Steel Corporation. Price visited Western Australia in 1961 to survey the viability of mining in the region (the Hammersley Range) in which the present day town of Tom Price is located. The town was constructed between 1964 and 1966. A railway linking Tom Price and the port town of Dampier was also completed in 1966.
