Tomowa-Sintow, Anna (1941– )

Bulgarian soprano. She made her debut at Stara Zagora in 1965, as Tatyana. She sang at Leipzig from 1967 and was Butterfly at the Berlin Staatsoper in 1969. She was ‘discovered’ by Karajan and in 1973 sang in the first performance of Orff's De temporum fine comedia, at Salzburg, where she has returned as Elsa, Mozart's Countess, and the Marschallin. She made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London in 1975; at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1978, as Donna Anna; and at the Paris Opéra in 1984, as Wagner's Elisabeth. Other roles include Yaroslavna in Prince Igor (Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1990).
