Tongeren

Town in the province of Limbourg, Belgium, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Hasselt; population (2001 est) 30,100. Probably the oldest town in Belgium, Tongeren was known as Civitas Tongrorum under the Romans. Part of the Roman defensive wall can still be seen. The town also has a 15th-century church, a convent, and the Moerenpoort, a remnant of fortification from the 14th century. Tongeren is the site of a cattle market.
