Tonopah

Community and administrative headquarters of Nye County, southwestern Nevada, 274 km/170 mi southeast of Reno; population (1990) 3,600. Some gold is mined, and livestock and grain are raised in the area. It is the site of the Central Nevada Museum.

It was a silver boom town after 1900; in 13 years its mines yielded nearly $10 million.
