tonsils

In higher vertebrates, masses of lymphoid tissue situated at the back of the mouth and throat (palatine tonsils), and on the rear surface of the tongue (lingual tonsils). The tonsils contain many lymphocytes and are part of the body's defence system against infection.

The adenoids are sometimes called pharyngeal tonsils.
