Toodyay

Town in the midlands of Western Australia, 87 km/54 mi northwest of Perth; population (1996) 700. Industries include cereal crops, sheep, tourism, flowers, and horse breeding. Recently Toodyay has become a popular destination for retirees and commuters working in Perth. Toodyay has been declared a historic town by the Australian National Trust.

Historic buildings include the Toodyay Tavern (1863), Gaol (1864), Freemasons' Hotel (1871), Courthouse (1897), and Connor's Mill (originally a flour mill, used as a power station 1920–1955, and now a museum)

The town was known as Newcastle until 1910. The first European settlers arrived in the 1830s and established sheep production and cereal crops. Serious fires in the area during the 1840s led to the establishment of the Aboriginal Fire Brigade in the 1850s. The construction of a railway to the town in 1888 facilitated an expansion of the local agricultural industry.
