Tooele

City and administrative headquarters of Tooele County, northwestern Utah, 45 km/28 mi southwest of Salt Lake City; population (1990) 13,900. It is a copper and lead smelting centre, but its main source of income is the large nearby army ordnance depot, which includes a number of weapons testing sites.

Tooele was settled by Mormons in 1849. It became a smelting centre after gold and silver were discovered in the nearby Oquirrh Mountains in the late 19th century.
