Spaatz, Carl (1891–1974)

US air force general. Sent to Britain as an observer in 1940, he studied RAF organization before returning to the USA. As commander of the US 8th Air Force in 1942 he launched a daylight bombing offensive against Germany and then moved to North Africa in 1943 to control air support over Tunisia and Sicily. He was placed in charge of Strategic Air Forces Europe in January 1944 and controlled the air offensive prior to the D-Day landings. He then turned to strategic bombing of German fuel supplies and railways before going to the Far East to command the Strategic Air Forces Pacific. After the war he became Chief of Staff to the US Air Force.
