Toppenish

City in south-central Washington, in the Yakima Valley, 31 km/19 mi southeast of Yakima; population (1990) 7,400. It is in an agricultural area and produces dairy items and potatoes. The city is the headquarters of the Yakama Nation and the commercial centre for the Yakama Indian Reservation. The Toppenish Creek Encampment, an annual powwow, is held here.

The community developed as a cattle and horse shipping point after the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Beet sugar processing was important until 1980.
