Topsfield

Town in northeastern Massachusetts, in Essex County 32 km/20 mi northeast of Boston; population (2000 est) 2,800. It has chalk, sand, and gravel deposits, and is known for the Parson Capen House (1683), an example of the style of English architecture popular in the colonies in the 17th century. It was incorporated in 1650.

After early iron-producing attempts were unfruitful, the town remained agricultural; today it is a residential suburb. It contains a traditional town common.
