Torhout

Town in the province of West Flanders, Belgium, 19 km/12 mi southwest of Bruges; population (1991) 18,200. The oldest town in Flanders, Torhout was once the chief cloth market of the country. The town still manufactures linen, and has a horse market.

Near Torhout lies the 11th-century castle of Wijnendale. During World War II King Leopold III had his headquarters at Torhout and capitulated here to the Germans on 28 May 1940.
