Torngat Mountains

Low mountain range situated mainly in the north of Labrador, Newfoundland, and extending for 200 km/125 mi between Hebron Fjord in the south and Cape Chidley in the north. Lying partly in Québec, the mountains reach a height of 1,652 m/5,420 ft at the peak known in Newfoundland as Mount Caubvick and in Québec Mont d'Iberville - the highest point in both provinces.

Geologically, the Torngat Mountains are a raised and dissected portion on the eastern edge of the Canadian Shield. The Gneissic rocks found at Saglek Bay in the range date from the Precambrian Era 3.6 billion years ago, and are among the oldest dated rocks in North America. Evidence of human activity from around 4000 BC has also been discovered in this area.Inuit people from further south fish in the fjords here, and offshore oil and gas exploration is conducted from an airstrip in Saglek.
