Torre Annunziata

Seaport and resort in Campania region, southern Italy, on the Bay of Naples, 20 km/12 mi southeast of Naples; population (1991) 52,900. Torre Annunziata is at the centre of the Neapolitan spaghetti and macaroni industry, and there are fisheries and a steel-tube works. It has been buried several times beneath the lava of Mount Vesuvius; there is a Roman villa, thought to have belonged to the emperor Nero's wife, Poppea.
