Torrington

City and coterminous township in northwestern Connecticut, on the Naugatuck River, 48 km/30 mi west of Hartford; population (1990) 33,700. It is the commercial centre of northwestern Connecticut.

The first machined brass products in the USA were made here in 1834, and the city was long known for its metal products. In 1850 the world's first condensed milk was made here. Torrington has a branch of the University of Connecticut.
