Tortelier, Yan Pascal

Tortelier, Yan Pascal (1947– )

French conductor. He was principal of the Ulster Orchestra 1989–92 and the BBC Philharmonic 1992–2002. His orchestration of the Ravel Piano Trio was performed in 1993 and he led London's first performance of Paul Hindemith's opera Sancta Susanna in 1995. He is the son of cellist Paul Tortelier.

Tortelier studied with Nadia Boulanger at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut in 1962, as violinist in the London performance of the Brahms Double Concerto, with his father. He studied conducting with Franco Ferrara and was associate with the Orchestre du Capitole, Toulouse, 1974–83. He led the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a London concert in 1978 and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra in 1985.
