Tosca, La

Opera by Puccini (libretto by Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on Sardou's drama), produced at the Teatro Costanzi, Rome, on 14 January 1900. In the story, Tosca commits suicide when she unsuccessfully bargains with lecherous Baron Scarpia for the life of her lover Cavaradossi. Cavaradossi is executed for treason and for harbouring the convict Angelotti.
