Tote Stadt, Die

Opera by Korngold (libretto by P Schott, based on Georges Rodenbach's play Bruges-la-morte), produced in Hamburg and Cologne on 4 December 1920. In the story, Paul exorcizes the memory of his dead wife Marie when he meets Mariette, who bears a striking resemblance to her. But he strangles his new lover when she insults his faith.
