Totnes

Market town in Devon, southwest England, on the River Dart; population (2001) 4,350. Boats are built here and there are sawmills, timber yards, a bacon-curing factory, and a creamery. Features include a 16th-century guildhall and a ruined Norman castle with a shell keep. A grammar school was founded here in the 16th century.

The Saxon name for Totnes was Toteneis.
