Totti, Francesco (1976– )

Italian footballer, who won the World Cup in 2006. Playing either as striker or as an attacking midfielder, Totti has spent his whole career with AS Roma and is the club's top goalscorer and most capped player. He made his debut for the club in 1993 as a 16-year-old and helped them capture the Serie A title in 2001. In 2007 he scored 26 goals to become not only the top scorer in Italy, but also the winner of the European Golden Boot. He played 58 times for his country, scoring nine goals. In the final of the European Championships, Totti was named man of the match even though Italy lost 2–1 to France. He played in the 2006 World Cup despite breaking his ankle earlier in the year. While still not fully fit, he was voted onto the tournament's All-Star team.
