Toul

French town in the département of Meurthe-et-Moselle, on the River Moselle and the Rhine and Marne Canal; population (1999) 22,200. Pottery is manufactured. The church of St Etienne was built between 965 and 1496. Taken by the French from the Germans in 1552, Toul was finally ceded to France in 1648 under the Treaty of Westphalia.
