Toungoo (or Taungoo)

Town of Bago division, Myanmar, situated on the west bank of the Sittoung River; population (2001 est) 97,900. Rice and rubber are produced in the surrounding Sittoung valley, while the hills of the Pegu Yoma to the west yield a valuable timber supply. Coffee processing is also economically important. Products are transported to Yangon and Mandalay by road and rail.

The city was founded in 1510 and is the former capital of the Toungoo kingdom (14th-16th century). Parts of the old walls and moat still survive, as do the remains of the Shwesandaw and Myasigon pagodas, which date from the mid-16th century.
