Tourte, François

    0.01 sec.

Tourte, François (Xavier) (1747–1835)

French bowmaker. He made great improvements in the violin bow, especially after 1775. From around 1786 his bows set the pattern for the type of bow used today.

He learnt his craft from his father and set up in business with his elder brother, known in literature as Tourte L'aîné, probably named Xavier, but they quarrelled and afterwards worked separately.
